EDHP 508: Organizational Theory

Course Description

Administrative effectiveness, especially during periods of change, is largely dependent upon the ability of leaders to analyze and consider organizational problems from multiple perspectives. A comprehensive understanding of organization theory provides leaders and change agents with frames of reference, assistance in the analysis of organizational problems and events, and guidance in decision making processes. To this end, theories that have emerged from years of research on organizations, both in and beyond higher education, will be reviewed and discussed in this course, with the ultimate goal of inspiring class members to become more reflective and intentional leaders of the organizations they serve.

This course is designed to provide doctoral students with an introduction to fundamental questions and approaches to the study of organizations. The purpose of the course is broad, providing students with a thorough grounding in both the “classic” social science literature on organizations, and the best of contemporary theory. Emphasis will be placed on decision making processes within and among organizations.
