Program Abstract

While serving as the dean of students at Concordia University, Irvine, Dr. Hoffman led the university in designing a comprehensive assessment program for its department of intercultural services. Over a five year period, Concordia University increased student of color retention rates by 6.3% (11.6% for Latino students) cutting a retention rate gap between students of color and White students from 11% to 1%. This session reviews the assessment strategies, development theories (not the ones you think!), and institutional efforts used. Dr. Hoffman is currently working with Ms. Hoffman and Mr. Coleman to set up similar assessment programs at Azusa Pacific University and Whittier College.
