Resources for Conducting a Job Search in Student Affairs
Overview: Academic 360.com is not a direct source for jobs, but a useful collection of links to websites that do have helpful information for finding jobs and conducting your job search.
Unique Features:
Human Resources Links -- Since not all jobs are posted to common sources such as the Chronicle, it can be useful to access the human resources departments of colleges and universities directly. This especially helpful if you are looking for jobs at specific institutions. Academic360 allows you to search for colleges alphabetically, or by state.
International Links -- Looking for a higher education job outside the United States? Academic360 includes links to other websites that can help you start your search.
Functional Areas -- Looking for jobs in a specific area such as student unions or LGBT services? Academic360 has links to websites and organizations that can help with your search.
Overview: As one of the primary professional associations in student affairs, ACPA provides a solid listing of jobs in student affairs. Though not as comprehensive as The Chronicle of Higher Education, ACPA often has jobs that are not posted to the Chronicle or other sites.
Unique Features: ACPA allows you to search for jobs by specific functional area and geographic region. You can also save your searches and receive email alerts every time a new posting meets your search criteria.
Overview: As noted on its website, "The California Community Colleges Registry is a large scale database containing the names, qualifications and desired position(s) of potential California Community College (CCC) faculty, support staff and management job applicants."
Unique Features: The California Community College Registry includes many useful resources including the following:
You can post a completed profile to the website -- this is a generic application and information about yourself (eg. resume, transcripts, etc.) that human resources departments at community colleges can access when searching for professionals to work at their institutions.
You can search for jobs by fields of professional interest, and by region, district, or institution. If you create a username and password (free service), you can also add saved searches to your profile -- if you choose, the Registry will email you every time a new job posting meets your search criteria.
Access tips for applying for jobs at community colleges as well as detailed information about minimum qualifications for teaching and employment at community colleges.
Finally, the Registry includes a helpful listing of community colleges in California including links to their websites.
Overview:
The California Student Affairs Network (CSAN) is a list-serve that
posts student affairs in California and selective West Coast states.
Job postings include entry-level, mid-level, mid-management, and
administrative positions at California Community Colleges, California
State Universities (CSU), University of California (UC) campuses,
private universities and selective out-of-state colleges and
universities. The network also provides professional development
announcements (i.e., conferences, symposia, and professional
association updates).
Overview: The Chronicle of Higher Education's "Chronicle Careers" is the most comprehensive source of job postings in higher education. The job postings include faculty and administrative positions, as well as positions in student affairs. The Chronicle also posts numerous openings in non-profit organizations, and the the Chronicle's partner, Philanthropy.com, is a comprehensive source for jobs in fund raising and development.
Unique Features: Use the "advanced search" to limit your searches for jobs by job category (e.g. residence life, counseling, etc.) and by zip code (e.g. select a 30 mile radius surrounding zip code 12345). You can also choose to limit your results to positions at community colleges. Once you finish this advanced search, select the "create search agent" link. Enter your email address, and the Chronicle will email you every time that a new job posting meets the criteria for your search.
Overview: Though not as comprehensive as the Chronicle, HigherEdJobs.com does often post jobs that do not make it to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Further, HigherEdJobs includes several features not available from other websites.
Unique Features:
Post your resume
Save searches as "job agents" and receive email messages every time a newly posted job meets the criteria of your search
