About Dr. Hoffman John

Family

People who have known me for a long time, know how career-focused I was through my 20s. These same friends of mine are sometimes surprised at how family-focused I've become in my 30s. I suppose some of this was a grand surprise as God knew better. That said, I learned about delayed gratification early in life, and I'm so thankful for the opportunities I've had that now allow me to enjoy time with my family.

My family life begins with Joy, the love of my life. I have many friends in happy marriages, but I know only a handful of other couples who share the depth of love that Joy and I have for each other. She amazes me as a wife, as a mother, and as a professional. Joy works as the director of the cultural center at Whittier College, is completing her Ed.D. in higher education from California Lutheran University, is active in church and professional associations, and is an avid fan of the Denver Broncos (something this Vikings fan does his best to celebrate tolerate).

Through Joy, I have also been blessed with two beautiful step-children, as well as the latest addition to our family, CeCe. Because of them, I am a better person - they have taught me lessons about everything from the joy of learning to the value of unconditional love and acceptance.

Faith

My faith is the core of my identity. My family and I are actively involved at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Whittier, California. We love the church's commitment to social justice, especially its involvement with the local Intercommunity Counseling Center, a local foodshelf, and Hispanic outreach ministries including bi-annual mission trips to Peru.

Books

I would like to say that I'm an avid reader, but the truth is that I'm not. I have often been guilty of buying more books than I read, and of starting more than I have finished. That said, one measure of my happiness at any given period in my life is the number of books that I'm reading, many of which have made a significant influence on me - these are books that I would recommend to anyone. I've listed a number of these books in this annotated bibliography of favorite books.

Hobbies, Movies, etc. <<coming soon someday>>
